Every gunite pool is a steel cage sitting in the most corrosive residential environment there is — chlorine, salt systems, and constant moisture. When that steel rusts, the shell cracks and the deck spalls. Pultrax GFRP rebar is 100% immune: the pool lasts as long as the concrete.
Why pools fail
Chloride ions — from chlorine sanitizer and especially from saltwater systems — migrate through gunite and attack the steel cage. Rust expands up to 6×, cracking the shell from inside. That's the structural crack, the rust stain bleeding through plaster, the spalled coping. GFRP removes the failure mode entirely.

Salt systems are the fastest-growing segment — and the hardest on steel. GFRP doesn't know the difference between fresh water and brine.
Hot, chemically dosed water accelerates corrosion further. Small vessels with tight bends use factory-made GFRP shapes.

Steel pool cages double as the equipotential bonding grid. GFRP is non-conductive, so bonding is provided the way the NEC already anticipates for non-metallic reinforcement: a simple copper bonding grid or perimeter loop, installed per NEC 680.26 and your local inspector. It's a small, well-understood detail — and it removes the stray-current corrosion path that salt systems create in bonded steel cages. The rule to put on the drawing: GFRP cage: structural only — never an electrode.
For pool builders
Run #3 GFRP on your normal grid. It flexes to floor-to-wall transitions and radius corners; tight bends, steps, and bond beams come as factory-made shapes with your order.
Zip-tie intersections — faster than wire, no tie-wire rust spots under plaster. Install the copper bonding loop per NEC 680.26 while the cage goes up.
Gunite or shotcrete exactly as you do today. GFRP won't shadow or shift under the nozzle, and there's no cage rust bleeding into your plaster job later.
